Drug Indication

Synonyms:

  • Indication

In DrugBank, this refers to any instance in which this drug may be used, as recommended by a US, Canadian, or European product label, and instances in which this drug is used that are not mentioned on official product labels. Indications which are not mentioned on product labels are referred to as off-label indications.

Indications most commonly include a condition that is being treated or modified with a drug. However, this is not the only possible concept type an indication may reference. Kinds of indications may include, but are not limited to management, treatment, prevention, induction, and diagnosis of various conditions or states. The conditions described in the indications are often linked to MedDRA, ICD-10, and SNOMED CT (see complete terms).

Patient characteristics and identifiers may be attached to an indication, for example, age group, associated condition, or product-specific information. For example, Azithromycin is indicated in the treatment of bacterial sinusitis for pediatric patients 6 months of age and older. This is considered an age group attachment to the indication. Another example is Pantoprazole, indicated in the intravenous (IV) form for the condition, GERD with erosive esophagitis, in patients who cannot take extended-release oral tablets. This is considered a patient characteristic and product-specific attachment to the indication.

[Structured indications] are provided on DrugBank to concisely represent the indications of a drug with specific attachments such as condition, age group, patient characteristic, among other data which provide information on specific and complex indications and off-label indications for drugs (see complete terms).
