Product Concept

In DrugBank this term refers to a particular feature developed and maintained by DrugBank. This feature creates a vocabulary of drugs, products, and brands, offering a hierarchical structure that enables easy navigation and the comparison of products across jurisdictions. Hence, it allows the selection of a specific drug representation in a three step process:

  1. The first step consists of the search for either the drug product or drug ingredient.
  2. The second step involves the selection of the available administration routes.
  3. The third step involves the selection of the available dosages for this particular representation.

At each level, all exact products for a concept can be extracted, including codes used by various jurisdictions (NDC code, etc.). This system allows the linking of a medical record or other concept to a very specific product (such as Tylenol), or a more general product (such as Acetaminophen).

Product concepts are available in the DrugBank data extracts and DrugBank API.
